Description:
Nitroglycerin, an organic nitrate,is a vasodilating agent which has been used to treat angina and heart failure since 1870.

Mode of action:
Step 01:       Nitroglycerin is converted NO (Nitric Oxide) By enzymes like Glutathione S-transferase /Cytochrome P450/Xanthine oxidoreductase
Step 02: Nitric oxide activates guanylate cyclase enzyme
Step 03: Resulting in an increase of guanosine 3'5'' monophosphate (Cyclic GMP) in smooth muscle and other tissues.
Step 04: Dephosphorilation of myosin light chains (which regulate the contractile state in smooth muscle)
Step 05: Vasodilation occurred

Indication:
An attack or acute prophylaxis of angina pectoris due to coronary artery disease.

Dosage and administration:
One tablet should be dissolved under the tongue or in the buccal pouch at the first sign of an acute anginal attack.
The dose should be repeated approximately every 5 minutes until relief is obtained.
Prompt medical attention is recommended if the pain persists after a total of 3 tablets in a 15 minutes period.
Sustained release tablet should be taken as 1-2 tablet 3 times daily.
